The Eastern South Police Command has arrested a man identified as Coffie Agyemang for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for an amount of GH¢1 million.
The suspect, a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, was arrested following intelligence gathered by the Akwatia police.
Residents in the community disclosed that the suspect had confided in a friend about plans to sell his child due to severe financial difficulties. The information was subsequently relayed to the police, who initiated an operation by placing the suspect under surveillance.
Police officers reportedly posed as prospective buyers and engaged the suspect in negotiations, during which an amount of GH¢1 million was allegedly agreed upon. The suspect is said to have brought the child to a designated meeting point, where he was arrested.
Other allegations suggest the suspect intended for the child to be killed for ritual purposes, after which the body would be returned to him to create the impression that the child had been murdered elsewhere. Police say these claims are part of ongoing investigations.
Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, said investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The child has since been placed in protective custody as investigations continue.
