The Ghana Police Service has warned the leaders of the Democracy Hub, stating that lawful measures will be enforced to maintain order after protesters blocked roads and caused significant inconvenience on the first day of their demonstration.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 22, the Police explained that a disagreement with the Democracy Hub over the chosen location for their planned protest led to road blockades and traffic diversions throughout parts of Accra, disrupting daily activities and affecting commuters. In response, a special operation was launched to ensure safety and order in the city.
Despite efforts from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to manage affected routes and assist drivers and pedestrians, the protesters unlawfully occupied the 37 Intersection.
Reports indicated that demonstrators blocked the road with vehicles and stones, set fires, harassed road users, and engaged in activities such as playing football, further escalating tensions. Some police officers were also verbally abused during the chaos.
The unlawful actions of the demonstrators caused severe traffic disruptions, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
Those in urgent need of medical attention struggled to reach hospitals, while families trying to visit sick relatives faced significant delays. In light of these disruptions, the Police expressed concerns that the protest was not being conducted peacefully and emphasized that such behaviour was not only unlawful but also un-Ghanaian.
Consequently, the Police warned the organisers sternly, stating that future demonstrations must not occur at the 37 Intersection.
They urged protesters to consider any of the seven alternative locations suggested by the Police, where they would be available to ensure the necessary security and support.
