The newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale in the North East region, Dr Tiah Kabiru Mahama, says many Ghanaians did not vote for the NPP in the just-ended election because they were disappointed in the current government.
According to him, those who were disappointed with the NPP did not, in turn, vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) either.
Speaking on Joy News' AM Show with Benjamin Akakpo on Tuesday, Mr Kabiru, who won the Walewale seat for the NPP said, “They (eligible voters) were disappointed in the NPP and they didn’t find faith in the NDC.”
He added, “If someone were convinced that the NDC was the solution to our development challenges, economic challenges, or unemployment issues, they would have come out to vote for the NDC.”
Mr Kabiru explained that around two million NPP supporters did not turn out to vote, contributing to the NDC's landslide victory.
However, he suggested, “If we are being fair with the analysis, the NPP would have secured one million votes, and the NDC would have taken one million, if all things were equal. But that number also didn’t turn up,” implying that those voters did not want the NDC either.
The total number of votes cast in this year’s election was 11,430,531, with valid votes at 11,191,422.
The NPP believes that voter apathy among their supporters contributed to their significant loss in the polls.
