Former Greater Accra Regional Minister and ex-MP for Tema East, Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, has suggested that the recent demolition of McDan’s warehouse at Spintex may be fuelled by a personal dispute between businessman Daniel McKorley (McDan) and the Acting Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer.
The demolition, reportedly carried out by operatives from National Security, is said to be based on aviation safety concerns, particularly claims that the structure was too tall and posed a risk to aircraft movement.
However, Mr Glover has questioned the motive behind the action, pointing to what he believes may be a retaliatory move linked to Mr Archer’s personal history with McDan.
“Even if Mr Archer has a personal issue with McDan, this is not the right way to go about it,” Mr Glover remarked during an interview on JoyPrime’s Prime Morning on Wednesday, 30th July.
“We cannot use state power to settle personal scores, especially when such actions can affect jobs, businesses and public confidence.”
He referenced a prior incident in which structures owned by Mr Archer at the Trade Fair site in Accra were demolished to make way for McDan’s developments, suggesting that the EOCO boss, now in a position of authority, may be influencing current state actions.
Mr Glover warned that individual grievances should not dictate national decisions, especially those with serious economic and social implications.
Meanwhile, the demolition exercise was marred by a troubling incident involving a military officer who obstructed JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony from covering the event.
The officer reportedly physically assaulted a civilian who was speaking to the journalist at the scene, and the journalist was later arrested and detained by the National Security.
