Police in Walewale have commenced a joint investigation with their counterparts in Bolgatanga following a deadly attack on a bus and a police checkpoint between Karimenga and Pwulugu in the Upper East Region.
A police officer, General Constable Oppong Damoah Seth, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen during the incident, which occurred at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, December 28, at the Karimenga Police Checkpoint. Two other officers sustained serious injuries.
According to police sources, the assailants initially ambushed a bus in the area, triggering a distress call. Police personnel who responded to the call reportedly managed to foil the attack, forcing the gunmen to flee into the surrounding bush.
However, the attackers later regrouped and returned to launch a second assault on the Karimenga Police checkpoint.
During the renewed attack, General Constable Oppong Damoah Seth, who was seated at the checkpoint, was shot in the head from behind and died instantly. Two other officers who returned fire were also shot in the legs.
The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
