Accra Lions defeated Karela United 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday for their first points of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League matchday.
Samuel Gyimah and Daniel Kwame Awuni scored for the hosts in the first-half before Enock Agblenyo grabbed the consolation goal for the ‘Pride and Passion’ lads in the second-half.
The win in the matchday two fixture takes Accra Lions to the ninth spot on the league log with three points, the same points as Karela United, who are just above them.
Accra Lions had a better start to the game and threatened to break the deadlock twice in the first fifteen minutes before a Dennis Votere mistake almost gifted Karela the lead in the 17th minute.
Samuel Gyimah glanced in the opener for the hosts after 24 minutes from the near posts. The goal came from a well-worked free-kick at the left side of the box.
Three minutes later, Daniel Kwame Awuni made it 2-0 for Accra Lions with a strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Ibrahim Tanko’s side maintained their control over the game to end the first-half with two goals ahead.
At the hour mark, second-half substitute Enock Agblenyo pulled one back for Karela United through a tame effort from the middle of the box.
The hosts held on to win 2-1 at full-time.
Accra Lions will play host to newcomers Tamale City on Thursday, September 22 on matchday three while Karela United will welcome Dreams FC to the CAM Park on Sunday, September 25.
