A prominent figure within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed concern over the ongoing intermittent power outages in the country, suggesting that there may be something suspicious about the situation.
His remarks follow Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh's statement over the weekend, where he insisted that Ghana is not currently experiencing "dumsor," and subsequently downplaying the necessity for a load-shedding timetable.
In response to this, a statement released by the Ministry of Energy on Tuesday, March 26, indicated that efforts were underway to address the energy sector's current challenges.
Taking to Facebook on Thursday (March 28), Mr Otchere-Darko raised questions about the timing of the current predicament.
“There is something mysteriously amiss somewhere. You have managed to keep the lights on for 7yrs, even during the height of the economic crisis in 2022. Why now? Still scratching my head…,” he posted.
At present, there is a growing call from some Ghanaians for the implementation of a load-shedding timetable to allow them to better organize their daily activities.
The NPP in opposition had taken on the NDC government at the time over the severe power crisis the country experienced.
Upon assumption of office, the NPP claimed that it had solved the power crisis it inherited, although the NDC said it had solved the problem largely before exiting office.
Although the lights have generally remained stable for the last 7 years of the NPP administration, the unstable situation started towards the end of the administration.
