The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been formally notified of the election of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The notification was conveyed by the Ashanti Regional Campaign Team of Dr Bawumia during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year, held at the Manhyia Palace on February 1.
The delegation was led by the Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr Kwame Ayew Afriyie.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Dr Ayew Afriyie credited Dr Bawumia’s victory in the party’s presidential primaries to the prayers and goodwill of the Asantehene, describing the outcome as a reflection of Otumfuo’s enduring support and blessings for the party and its leadership.
“Yesterday, the NPP went to the polls and elected his son,” he said, adding that arrangements would be made for Dr Bawumia to formally pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene upon his return from an announced leave of absence.
The delegation also used the occasion to seek the continued blessings and guidance of the Asantehene for the party’s activities in the Ashanti Region and beyond, as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia emerged winner of the NPP’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, securing the mandate to lead the party into the next general election.
