The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has condemned the killing of a 90-year-old woman accused of witchcraft in Kafaba, Savannah Region.
A statement from the Ministry demanded, “immediate investigations and prosecution of all the perpetrators of this gruesome murder in accordance with our laws.”
The gruesome lynching of the deceased, according to the Ministry, “has, rightly so, shaken the very foundation of our sensibility as humans.”
“The Ministry, on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, unreservedly condemns this barbaric act…”
“It certainly cannot be said that such antiquated mentality could still be with us in this 21st century where the world and Ghana in particular has made significant strides in upholding the rights and dignity of women,” the statement added.
In a video sighted by JoyNews, the deceased, Akua Denteh was slapped, kicked and caned on Thursday at Kafaba after a supposed soothsayer accused her of witchcraft, resulting in the underdevelopment of the area.
In an interview, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Enoch Adutwum Bediako said the son of the deceased, Mahama Salami reported the incident to them around 4 pm after his sister called him to tell him about the occurrence.
According to him, immediately after the matter was reported, the Salaga Police proceeded to the scene, which is about 21 kilometres from Salaga and saw the lifeless body of the victim.
The Regional Commander said after processing the scene as part of investigations, the body was sent to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) mortuary for preservation.
He stated that they are on the heels of those who perpetrated the heinous act to bring them to book.
