Hundreds of police officers have departed to various centres in the Akwatia constituency as part of final security preparations for Tuesday’s by-election.

The deployment, which is part of a larger security operation involving more than 5,500 personnel, is aimed at maintaining law and order across polling stations, collation centres, and identified hotspots. Officers are expected to provide protection for electoral officials, voters, and materials.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, earlier held a last-minute briefing with the deployed officers, urging them to remain professional, impartial, and alert throughout the exercise.

He was seen in the company of senior officers as he interacted with personnel on the ground.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of a peaceful process, stressing that contingency measures, including possible military backup, are in place to swiftly respond to any disturbances.

Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, was also spotted at the Collation Center.

The Akwatia by-election has attracted national attention as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) go head-to-head in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.

Meanwhile, the National Peace Council’s efforts to secure a peace pact between the NDC and NPP ahead of the by-election have hit a setback.

This has heightened political tension in the constituency.

At a scheduled meeting at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Akwatia, the NPP rejected the NDC’s representatives.

The opposition party argued that the party had presented constituency executives instead of national-level executives to sign the agreement.
