The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Daniel Parker has questioned the Police on the arrest of persons purported to be national security operatives during the NPP constituency elections.
The Ghana Police Service arrested four men posing as national security personnel at the Ayawaso North Constituency voting center. One of them was seen with a sidearm. On Wednesday, two men were arrested on similar grounds at Okaikoi South Constituency
Reacting to the arrest in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Friday, Daniel Parker asked whether it is “wrong to put on black, black attire?”
“Is it wrong for you to put on black trousers and a black top that somebody will say black, so you are Police personnel? This a question I keep posing to all journalists that I have had the opportunity to talk to,” he said.
He further described the arrest of citizens in black attires for allegedly posing as security personnel as ‘wrong.’
“Today I am in blue and the top is also deep blue. If I decide to put on a jacket, it is my right, it is my attire...If I am just putting on black attire… I don’t think that the Police have any right to arrest me,” he said.
This notwithstanding, he intimated that if the person is armed with a weapon that could pose a threat to life “then the Police can arrest the person.”
Commenting on the arrest of the main who is said to be possessing a sidearm, he said: “Until we find out whether he is working with any of the security apparatus, nobody can claim that he is just an ordinary person.”
He added that “we must find out from the Police who that individual is, because there are people in this country who use sidearm and during conferences like this, we don’t expect a party person to go to a conference center with a sidearm. It is only the Police we expect that from.”
He indicated that no other security agencies have been tasked to provide security, apart from the Police Service.
