The now Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the Speaker of Parliament of acting in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This followed Speaker Alban Bagbin's declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

The affected seats include three occupied by members of the incumbent party (now in the Minority) and one by the opposition NDC [Majority].

The legislators affected by the ruling are the NDC's Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central constituency, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena, Kojo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, and NPP's Cynthia Morrison of Agona West constituency.

The Speaker’s decision has sparked a backlash from the incumbent party, who staged a walkout in protest of the ruling.

Addressing the media after the walkout, Mr Afenyo-Markin criticised the Speaker’s actions as biased, alleging that the move was intended to benefit the NDC.

“It is so clear that what the Speaker did was to give advantage to the NDC and do the bidding of the NDC,” he said.

The ruling party, now sitting in the Minority, announced that it will boycott parliamentary proceedings until the matter is resolved by the Supreme Court.

Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s interpretation of the Constitution, stating that the Speaker had no right to interpret the Constitution.

"..The service of the writ to the biddings of the NDC—it is so clear. But we believe in the law,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the party will challenge the Speaker’s ruling in court. “We will follow up the process at court, and if the court makes a pronouncement, we will respect the orders of the court,” he added.
