Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Interior Committee has called for an urgent probe into the allegations of a clandestine scheme to oust the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, from his position prior to the 2024 general elections.

James Agalga said the probe will help ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the supposed leaked tape.

According to him, one of the voices heard in the audio appears to be that of a senior officer who might be in line to replace the IGP when he's eventually removed.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, July 11, the Builsa North lawmaker said those behind the plan must fished out and dealt with accordingly.

“I don't know whose voice it is. I mean, you can hear several voices in the background, but from every indication one of the voices appears to be a voice of the senior police officer who is close to the feet of government.”

“Because the person appears to sound as though he is in line to become IGP if the current IGP were to be removed, and so it raises very serious questions in for me. I heard the Minister speak to the issue and it appears he does not to know who the person responsible for that audio is. And for me, that is the more reason why we should have a probe.”

“This is a very serious matter. I mean for people in this time and age, to conspire amongst themselves to have the IGP removed, so that they can protect a certain party in government.”

A supposed leaked tape has surfaced, uncovering a plot involving an unknown high-ranking police officer and a member of the New Patriotic Party, aimed at removing the IGP from office.

The motive behind this plot appears to be the concern that Dr. Dampare could impede efforts by the governing party to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 elections.

Some Ghanaians have spoken against the supposed plot and thrown their weight behind the IGP although the claims are yet to be verified.

Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has already denied the claims.

Speaking to JoyNews, Ambrose Dery said the IGP has been exceptional in the delivery of his duties and there are no efforts to take him out of office.

“I think that you should ignore it with the contempt that it deserves. There is no plot to remove anybody, I don’t know about anything. As far as I am concerned, he is doing a job,” he stated.

When asked if his office is interested in probing the claim, he replied in the negative.

“I am not sure I want to get involved in any investigation except that they relate to crime, then we will do that. But I think that so far we are doing well,” he said.

According to him, the incumbent government is not going to temper with the 2024 national polls.
