The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that Brigadier General Michael Opoku, General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been tasked by President Akufo-Addo to execute an election-rigging scheme in the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2024 polls.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, November 19, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi claimed that Brigadier General Opoku was recently promoted to his position as part of a strategy to rig the elections in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He added that the position was recently given to him in 2024, adding that it is not a mere coincidence that instead of being reprimanded for his role in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, he has rather been promoted.
He alleged that the officer had been promised the role of Chief of Defence Staff if the NPP secured victory in the 2024 election.
“In his current position, Brigadier General Micheal Opoku has been mandated by Akufo-Addo to take off a well-crafted scheme that has been designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming elections, particularly in the Ashanti region through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2 this year,” he claimed.
He added “Having relocated his family to the United Kingdom, Brigadier General Opoku has vowed to do all it takes to carry out his shady election rigging plot in exchange for the position of the Chief of Defence Staff in the unlikely events that the NPP wins the 2024 election.”
Mr Gyamfi also alleged that the NDC has received Intel that Brigadier General Opoku is training thugs of the NPP at the Asatuary military camp.
According to him, "Brigadier General Opoku plans to cloth these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters and innocent civilians on Election Day".
