Man arrested for threat of death, unlawful possession of firearm

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Seth Welbeck, 53, for threat of death and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday, February 3, following a forgery case in which the suspect had been issued a criminal summons to appear before the Accra Circuit Court.

A statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Head of Public Affairs, Accra Region, said the suspect was being escorted to the court cells after proceedings when he requested permission from the investigator to lock his vehicle.

In the process, the suspect suddenly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol, loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from the vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, threatening him.

With the assistance of other court officials and witnesses, the investigator swiftly disarmed the suspect and brought the situation under control.

The statement said the suspect was currently in Police custody assisting with investigations and would arraigned to face justice.

The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against acts of violence, threats, and the possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful authority, noting that such actions posed a serious threat to lives and property.

The Command also advised the public to comply with lawful court processes and Police procedures at all times.

“Any attempt to obstruct justice, intimidate public officers or resort to violence will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” it said.
