MP for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George has called for an end to what he describes as "the bastardisation of the military" in the country.

He made the call on Tuesday during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 'March for Justice'. He questioned the use of military personnel for dispersing crowds during protests.

"The military is not trained for crowd control so what's their business on the road during demonstrations. This bastardisation of the military is wrong. The military is not the first point of instance in crowd control. The military is always a backup when the police themselves make the request for the military, " he said.

The comment follows recent brutalities meted out to civilians by military personnel in the Wa township in search of a missing mobile phone belonging to one of them.

Another case was a clash between the youth of Ejura and military personnel which resulted in the deaths of two people, with a survivor having one leg amputated after the incident.

The youth had stormed the streets demanding justice for the deceased #FixTheCountry campaigner, Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed, who died on Monday, June 28, after a mob attack two days earlier. Unfortunately, military men deployed to restore peace, fired into the demonstrating crowd, resulting in some casualties.

Sam George condemned the use of military men in what he called harmless civilian demonstrations, stating that the use of military men in crowd control is always a last resort.

He believes military men who go on the rampage during demonstrations have been acting on the orders of "politicians" in government.

He, therefore, charged President Akufo-Addo in his capacity as the Commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and especially authorities at the Ghana Armed Forces to call the military men to order.

"The fidelity of our armed forces and our security services should not be to a politician, it should be to Ghanaians. It is not a politician who should call in the military.

He further charged the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defense Staff to resist any form of control coming from government officials since they owe allegiance to the citizenry and not to any political party.

"To the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defense Staff, you're three-star generals not because of a politician. Your three stars were given to you by your training, your hard work, and your years of service. Don't let a politician control you," he said.
