Police in the Oti Region have retrieved a large quantity of suspected cannabis valued at more than GH₵1.4 million from a truck that was intercepted late last year.
According to the Police, the Volvo truck with registration number GC 3522-09 was stopped on December 29, 2025, at the Bonakye checkpoint while heading towards Passa.
Intelligence reports had suggested that the vehicle was transporting illegal goods.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor of the Public Affairs Unit in the Oti Region, the Police said the driver and one other occupant fled the scene after the vehicle was stopped. They abandoned the truck with the ignition key still in it.
Following investigations, officers secured a court order to open the vehicle. On February 24, the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba, authorised the Police to open the truck.
The exercise took place at Kwanta in the presence of representatives from the Police, Military, National Intelligence Bureau, Defence Intelligence, Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission in Jasikan, and members of the media.

When the truck was opened, officers found 320 cartons of bottled mineral water. However, concealed beneath the cartons were 91 bales of suspected cannabis.
The Police said the 91 bales contained a total of 7,173 slabs of the suspected substance. The estimated street value of the drugs exceeds GH₵1.4 million.

The seized items have been retained as investigations continue.
The Police have assured the public of their commitment to fighting the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs.
They also encouraged members of the public to volunteer information that will assist in crime prevention and detection.
