The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has advised Ghanaians to emulate the exemplary life of the late former President, John Evans Atta-Mills.
Today, Monday, July 24, 2023, is marks eleven years since the late president's demise.
Speaking at a ceremony to honour his memory, the leader of the NDC MPs in the 8th Parliament said the late former President loved everyone irrespective of their stature in society.
According to him, “his open-door policy welcomed all to share their concerns and aspirations for a better Ghana.”
The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam lawmaker has thus urged all and sundry to emulate his exemplary life for the togetherness and unity of the country.
“President Mills was not only a visionary leader but also a unifying force who epitomized the values of unity, humility, and selflessness.”
“Let us remember President Mills not only for his political acumen but also for his compassion and empathy towards his fellow citizens.”
“He had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and his open-door policy welcomed all to share their concerns and aspirations for a better Ghana,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday, July 24.
Dr Ato Forson also urged Ghanaians to cooperate with their fellow citizens even in disagreements as the late former president did.
“As we commemorate this solemn day, let us rekindle the spirit of unity and cooperation that President Mills embodied.”
“On behalf of the minority caucus in Ghana's parliament, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mills family and loved ones.”
Earlier in the day, the National Democratic Congress held a memorial service for the late leader.
The memorial service, held at Asomdwee Park in Accra, was attended by party members, political dignitaries, and citizens alike, as they came together to honor the memory of the former President.
The late President Mills, fondly known as “Asomdweehene” (King of Peace), was an esteemed figure in Ghanaian politics and held the highest office in the country from 2009 to 2012. He was known for his dedication to democratic principles, social justice, and inclusive governance.
The memorial service began with speeches from prominent NDC leaders who shared heartwarming anecdotes and memories of their time working alongside President Mills. They praised his humility, unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress, and his passion for uplifting the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
The current NDC leadership emphasised the importance of carrying forward President Mills’ legacy and principles, pledging to continue the fight for social justice, economic development, and good governance.
Delivering a speech at the memorial service, General Secretary of the party, Fifi Kwetey called on party members to emulate the lifestyle of the late President who died in office on 24, July 2012.
Former President John Dramani Mahama in a speech eulogised the late President Mills, describing him as a dignified leader whose absence can never be filled.
